Marxism and the English Revolution - John Rees

John Rees seeks to re-establish the importance of the extensive and varied Marxist contribution to the history of the English Revolution. Many historians argue that we are now in a ‘post-revisionist’ era in the study of the 17th century, but there is little agreement on what this means. This book seeks to broaden the discussion of what an overarching explanation of the tumultuous events that ended in the execution of King Charles and the declaration of a Republic in 1649 might look like.

In examining the place of the English Revolution in the general crisis of 17th century Europe, the methodological strengths of Marxism, and the relationship between politics and social class, this book seeks to reintegrate Marxism into the mainstream of debate about the English Revolution.
